If you own two or more vehicles with a GVW of 6,000 lbs or more C.A.R.B. requires you to comply with California’s Periodic Smoke Inspection Program. Our technicians and equipment are certified according to the SAE J1667 specifications to perform state opacity tests on fleets of any size.
What are the allowable levels of smoke opacity?
All 1991 or newer engines must not exceed 40% smoke opacity.
CARB requires the two most recent consecutive years records be retained as well as initial test, repair info, post-repair opacity test and meter calibration. CDS retains all testing information for you at no extra cost.

Regulated By California Air Resources Board
Applicability Heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicles 14,000 lbs. GVWR or greater
6,000 lbs. GVWR or greater for 1998 and older.
Annually (on or before December 31 of each year)
Because DPF filters capture all particulates they can mask serious engine malfunctions. Opacity testing your engine before the DPF can be an effective and inexpensive tool to catch engine failures before they cause damage to any engine or emission components.
